Our final project is a three story Art Gallery which was built at quarter scale. The two main inspirations for the project were the Leutschenbach School by Christian Kerez and the Picture Window House by Shigeru Ban, both of which are inhabited trusses. From our previous project we selected the variation consisting of two platforms suspended by two V shaped compression elements, one offset on each side. To increase lateral stability we added two more V shaped elements so that there would be one on each corner of the building, and increased the width of the building. Lastly, a core was added to also increase lateral stability, along with providing a means to move between floors. The roof was created using more vierendeel trusses running the width of the building in a triangular configuration. The second floor features a cantilevered balcony that uses an extension of the beams from the floor slab as support. The main structural material is cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue laminated timber.
