HANGING MODEL  / EXPERIMENT ONE

This project experimented with the spatial potentials of catenary curves. We developed a12x12x12in bounding box made of clear acrylic punctuated on each side with a 1x1in grid. We then inserted a dowel system into the bounding box, each dowel itself subdivided by 1in notches. The dowels, overlapping in perpendicular intersections, created a three-dimensional grid system that allowed us to anchor our varied materials at different heights.

We selected a single material for our explorations, a thin weave of a synthetic metallic fabric. We developed a flexible scaffolding system that we could adjust in three-dimensions in order to control the form and condition the fabric. Through this system we demonstrated weight distribution through draping, folding, and stretching and preserved these conditions by casting our compression model in glycerin.
