HANGING MODEL  / EXPERIMENT ONE

The project explores asymmetrical catenary arch property with an inverse model of hanging chains in the hanging model. Instead of having two nods of a chain starting at the same level, we lower one node with an additional chain and a load asserting downward forces. We further explore the asymmetry by transforming the inverse arches to inverse vaults and experimenting with openings and directionality.

Tested variables, including the length of chains, weights of the loads, and positions of the strings' hanging points.

The structure started with one block and two chains to two different loads and multiple chains, forming enclosed boundaries for vault surfaces. One of the iterations was selected to experiment with clothes and plaster to generate vaulted surfaces among the surface boundaries. The model was finally inverted after the plaster hardened, displaying the full compression condition of the system.
