TECH I / ASSIGNMENT I
EQUILIBRIUM

Explore the equilibrium of a solid mass supported by compressive and tensile forces (strut and tie model) within a virtual bounding box of 30x30x30cm.

PROCESS

Step 01

Step 02

Step 03

Step 04

Step 05

Develop a structural concept using 3D modeling software (e.g. Rhino) or sketches.

According to Step 01, produce a 3D structural diagram representing in blue color the elements under compression, in red color the elements under tension, and in green the applied loads.

Build the physical model of the concept developed in Steps 01 and 02.

Based on the model developed in steps 01 to 03, produce 6 parametric variations by introducing modifications on the applied loads and structural elements in tension and compression (position, direction, dimension, etc..) and/or in the stereotomic solid (geometry, position, material, dimension…). Think about a fabrication technique that allows you to arrange your structural elements in different positions with precision and measurement (scoring lines, drilling holes, cutting slots …). Represent your 6 variations in an axonometric diagram (e.g. Rhino command: Make 2D).

Test the variations produced in step 04 building the corresponding physical models. Take photographs of the 6 models using the same camera settings (position, angle, etc…) and a black background.

MATERIALS

Stereotomic solid (load)

Tensile elements

Compressive elements

e.g. wooden, stone, clay, plaster ...

e.g. strings, threads, cords, elastic bands ...

e.g. metal or plastic struts or wooden sticks...

No glue is allowed for this experiment.
