EQUILIBRIUM MODEL / EXPERIMENT ONE

The model features a central cube lofted by fixed-length strings, connected to four vertical V-shaped components secured at the base. The angle of each “V” is determined by the placement of a wooden piece. This model explores the duality between the tensile and compression forces acting upon the V-shaped components. The tensile forces in the fixed-length string, created by supporting the heavier cube, pull the arms of the V-shaped components together.

Meanwhile, the wooden piece uses compression forces to keep the angle of the V-shaped components in lace. To prevent each V shape from falling forward, a hinge system is created to only allow the widening and narrowing of the base angle. Moreover, by attaching the strings at the bottom of the cube, the orientation of the cube block corresponds to the various degrees and directions of tension.
