EQUILIBRIUM MODEL / EXPERIMENT NINE

This project explores the inherent properties of our found object, the fork, under compression. To form our models, we exploited the fork’s unique properties, such as curvature, tine spacing, and varying weight distribution. We used fishing line for our tensile element and thumb tacks for Various supports.

We used multiple approaches for our iterations, including cradling the cube between two forks, using the friction of interlocked fork tines to provide a base for the cube, and cantilevering forks by interlocking tines with screw threads. We also did two similar iterations creating a “web” of tension by weaving fishing line through fork tines and around fork handles. In most of our iterations, we stabilized the cube through the tension of fishing line running on top of it.
