For the equilibrium model, we wanted to experiment with the concept of supporting a platform outside of the constraints of a base. Similar to a system that suspends an object over a cliff, we wanted to suspend the platform over the edge of a high surface. We began with six notches in the base and three notches on the platform to be used in a compression force system, allowing two angled dowels to hold the platform at specific elevations. The platform elevated by the dowels needs an opposing force to remain at each angle, so we implemented string into the design to employ tension force. We attached the string to a large, central dowel and the base through a series of triangles to act as an opposing force upon the compression force enacted on the platform from the angled dowels. The tension force system of the string counterbalances the far side of the platform to maintain the platform’s stability.
