The baseboard contains a grid of points that can be achieved in tension with the surface, counteracting the compression force generated by the weight on the opposite side. As the angle of the column supporting the surface changes, the position of the tensile forces are adjusted to counteract the remaining forces involved. The surface achieves static equilibrium when the weighted forced is balanced, or equal, to the tensile force imposed using the string. Consequently, the surface exists in a state of rest in accordance with Newton’s First Law of Motion, until any additional force is applied. Each variation is only successful when the sum of all forces is equal to zero, resulting in a static surface.
