This experiment explores the formal and functional possibilities of a folded spiral form. The structure is inspired by the work of artist John Edmark. Each of our three models can take a variety of forms depending on the angle of the joints. Because of the structure’s ability to change forms, we believe it has strong potential as a drawbridge at the pedestrian scale. A cable system could be used to pull the panels together, drawing the structure into an upright position, allowing greater clearance heights below the bridge.
