For our folding model, we focused on continuing our explorations in parabolic curvature from the previous two exercises. We discovered that complex poly-curved surfaces can be easily created by using the same form generation strategy used for folded plate surfaces. Specifically, by folding planar surfaces along opposing score lines, i.e. valley and ridge folds, complex and structurally rigid forms can be generated. To make our six variations, we began by creating a field of closed, non-intersecting freeform curves. We then assigned a fold direction to each curve, either negative to the surface plane (ridge), or positive to the surface plane (valley), We then cut our field into seven inch squares and then laser cut the resulting score lines onto bristol, completing the models by gently folding along the score lines to create the final freeform poly-curved surface.
