FOLDING MODEL / EXPERIMENT EIGHT

This project explores a form-finding strategy for creating lightweight roof structures. Individual ‘roofs’ are created by suspending strings from hooks with weights attached at their intersection. Variations are produced by inserting wooden frames and changing the location of the hooks, length of the strings, and number of roofs. The strings may then be stiffened in a starch solution to stand on their own. These models draw from vernacular Indonesian huts with steep roofs to facilitate ventilation. Different model iterations could react to possible adjustments such as solar orientation, aggregation of rooms, or requirements for passive ventilation.
