This experiment adapts an established method of form-finding, the hanging membrane, to an alternative material. When heated, plastic becomes malleable and can create a fabric-like membrane. To produce these models, sheets of acrylic were heated while suspended from above. When cooled, the resulting forms hardened into shells. The variation in forms was achieved by changing the number of attachment points (with three, four, or six connections), and with the addition of a weight. Earlier experiments also explored variations in offset from the edge of the sheet, asymmetry of attachment points, differently shaped weights, and differently shaped sheets of acrylic.
