Our project explores the expression of folds with different petal typologies to create a flower (umbrella structure). Each petal has a distinct function and formal quality. With a default shape, we begin to create petals to control water, light, shadow, weight, and aesthetics. It is important to note that each petal is made of the same sized triangle with various folding strategies. With the same shape, we created distinctly different flowers ranging from eight to ten petals. As part of our process, we fold paper and explore the potential of the folds to create distinct functions. For example, we fold the edges in the model that explores light to allow a gap between the petals. The opening allows light to fall between, creating a form in which light is affected.
