FOLDING MODEL / EXPERIMENT TEN

This project started by exploring a planar rectangular unit with slits on all sides along with a single score line located on the horizontal or vertical axis. We began playing with this modular unit where interconnected pieces create a structure that grows upwards and outwards. We realized the modular unit didn’t utilize the fold enough in these experiments but instead relied on the slits to interconnect planes. From this learning experience we explored the use of a single piece of paper rather than multiple pieces, using different mountain and valley folds in relationship to each other to create a rigid structure. Our final iterations originated from the same template but varied in the angle of fold lines or whether removal of material was introduced. Beginning with a flat surface, the museumboard was then bent at the score lines. Following this,
a string was anchored at four symmetrical points of the structure that would act in tension to hold the paper stable. Within our six iterations we determined that the folding model could be viewed at the scale of a stool (Iteration 4 and 6) or at the scale of a pavilion (Iteration 1-3 and 5).
