HANGING MODEL  / EXPERIMENT ONE

Our project intends to combine the idea of regulatory systems and free forms. Inspired by Frei Otto’s project, our project developed a regular mesh created by wood sticks, trying to find a middle ground of free form and regular form. The first system is the mesh that we developed from connecting basic units of squares. We connected wood sticks with rings and created this rigid mesh. We discovered that the square could deform in the way that creates multiple surfaces, generating spatial possibilities.

The second system is the grid system on top of the hanging box structure. We hang the mesh with magnets that allow us to freely move, and the plexi grid is used to regulate the movements, creating a systematic array of modeling possibilities.In terms of fabrication, we laser-cutted the wood sticks elements and hand crafted the the mesh in different dimensions. After multiple tests we determined the final six variations.
