HANGING MODEL / EXPERIMENT TWELVE
Our overall goal was to create a form that could be spatially unique. Drawing inspiration from precedents such as Gaudi, allowed us to explore the idea of creating moments that displayed catenary arches. While attempting to achieve this particular shape, we could produce a multitude of forms. Initially, we had the idea of using chains to create these forms. These chains would hang and create columns to hold a heavier sheet of chainmail. However, we decided that fabric would give us more unique conditions. The idea then became utilizing metal tubing that would suspend and hold the fabric. We added beading to the fabric in order to give it weight, which would allow it to hang further. We then used a grid that we would place the tubing of different sizes, which would act as the columns to the structure.
