MEMBRANE MODEL / EXPERIMENT TWO
Our membrane model is an evolution of our tensilemodel, keeping the original geometricsystem but attempting to expand on it’s variabilitythrough the relationship between the mirroredframes. A stretchable fabric spread over both sideswas pulled through the triangular segmentsand connected at the center with grommets, generatingeight hourglass shaped figures. Thestructure was then sandwiched between two pieces ofplexiglass that allowed light to filterthrough the upper membrane and illuminate the interiorspace.
Manipulating strings knotted around the connections between each segment enabled us to control the verticality of each module and allowed for unique patterns across the model as a whole, such as gradients or mirrored relationships. This differs greatly from our tensile model to which we could only add and remove segments. While we were not able to achieve the extreme vertical variation we had hoped for due to limitations of our fabric choice, our system of three positions for the eight modules gave us a lot more freedom to play with.
