MEMBRANE MODEL / EXPERIMENT THREE

Ryan Lipscomb
Isabella de la Iglesia
Ezra Smith

Our membrane model was inspired by the emtech porous wall experiments. In this way the membrane of our experiment is used as the formwork as opposed to a component of the final model. The intention was to use water balloons as objects to fill a mold that we then pour plaster into, yet our first test showed us that plaster itself without a reinforcing fiber was not enough to hold its shape. We found that dried grass worked best as a fibrous material to put into the plaster mixture. Our final six variations use 3 sizes of balloons to create varying qualities of porosity. Light became an interesting factor in the final models as the “wall” became porous to bold light and air through the voids.
