This project involves the manipulation of a tensile membrane within an armature to produce both positive and negative forms. A piece of fabric is suspended within a 18x18x18” wood armature by attaching strings to its surface and tying them to the armature. Variations are produced by manipulating the size and shape of the fabric, attaching strings at different locations on the fabric and the armature, inserting rigid elements into the fabric, and adjusting the tension of the strings. Completed iterations may be rotated onto any face of the armature to produce different readings and implied architectural scales. Therefore, endless iterations may be created unless restrictions are adopted, such as symmetry, modularity and repetition, or consistent shapes and materials of fabric.
