The goal of our project was to examine the continuous tensile forces within a membrane structure. In addition, we explored how the form can change depending on the boundary conditions, which allowed us to create three column-like systems. Drawing inspiration from precedents like the Sendai Mediatheque designed by Toyo Ito, we wanted to test the various forms of these membrane structures that could change depending on their boundary conditions. The boundary conditions, in this case, are represented by three
perforated skins of plexi that allow us to insert a string that attaches at three different levels of the membrane structure. These strings act as cables that push the structures' tensile boundaries, allowing them to take on various forms. Also, to test this concept even further, we laser cut six holes on the tangent axis of a six by six grid on the top and bottom of the structure. The circular holes allowed us to place the top and bottom parts of the structures in different places simultaneously.
