Our project this week explored the limitations of compression force using cantilevers. Each variation creates a space with a “floating” corner. In addition, the variations are related because each one has only one point of contact with the baseboard. In order to create these structures, we made cement rectangular beams and cube weights from scratch. The use of cement allowed us to construct more extreme cantilevers, and made the “floating” corner possible.
A few of our variations could be further explored. Variation 6 features two cubes being placed simultaneously; this is an example of force balancing. Furthermore, we challenged ourselves to place a weight on the “floating” corner. As we added more weights on the protruding cantilevers, we had to place more and more weight on the cantilevers supporting those cantilevers. The density of the concrete enabled us to add this extra weight with less volume.
