For our reciprocal project we want to explore various conditions of walls and platforms using notches to be able to support several platforms. To be able to focus our ideas, we experimented with laser cut pieces of chipboard and thin wood platforms to help us understand what we wanted to focus on with our designs. We ended up wanting to avoid having any walls directly at our corners so that it would encourage people in the space to look out, but we wanted our walls to be on the perimeter of the platforms to also allow people to inhabit the space within. We also wanted to test and see how few walls we could use and have our structure be able to withstand horizontal forces. Based off of the information we learned from class, we developed digital models that would be able to create a sturdy structure and accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. From this project we learned the importance of wall position to be able to create solid structures and we were able to experiment with variations in orthogonal designs.
