EQUILIBRIUM MODEL  / EXPERIMENT THREE

Building off our equilibrium experiment, which explored the potential of a mast with tension cables as a system for supporting a cuboid mass, our reciprocal experiment develops a system of cantilevered beams supported by the same mast and tension cable system as before. When placed into a gridded network, these cantilevers become base points for further structural expansion in the form of additional beams stacked on top of, or hanging from the primary cantilevers.

 Furthermore, these additional beams can interface with more than one primary cantilever and mast system, thus joining the discrete systems into a networked whole with load distribution, creating a much more stable structure. By slightly adjusting the angle, length, and force of the tension elements on the mast, we are able to adjust the relationships within the network, such as increasing the vertical displacement of one cantilever to shift the distribution of load. As a whole, the system is quite adaptable and easily expanded.
