Building on our equilibrium and reciprocal model, we explored how balance can be achieved through a combination of notched joints and tension. Columns and beams lock into one another at notches for primary support, while diagonal tension members between the columns brace and stiffen the base. To amplify this relationship between compression and tension, we removed the columns along one side to create a more open shaded zone. The roof over this open space is then anchored by tension lines, so that its stability depends on both the framed supports and the pulling forces in the roof.
