Using one of our two-story umbrella structures as a starting point, our combinatorial model clarifies the ideas we developed in previous exercises. The structural components for our final model were simplified to two repeated wooden beam pieces. Constructed like Lincoln Logs, the tower rises as a sequence of stacked beams, alternating between notched and unnotched pieces. The stack is secured with cotton twine that extends from the top of the structure to the base.
A series of four shading screens hangs from the top of the tower and can be raised or lowered by twisting the dowel. For a larger scale version, Stronger materials would be needed to realize this concept at a larger scale, such as CLT beams and steel cables.
