The impetus of this assignment stemmed from our mutual desire to juxtapose the dense mass of the granite block with the fragility of an object whose weight is nearly inconsequential in comparison. Through the iteration process, our initial concept for this object evolved from the brittleness of domed ceramic first to the cellular structure of 3D-printed material until it settled on the fibrous nature of flimsy basswood. By establishing the position of the granite, the structural system became that of arranging minimal material, maximizing its tensile strength and compressibility.
