PROCESS

The impetus for this project stemmed from our desire to develop a system composed of more than one structural component. Inspired by Lluis Muncunill, we sought to merge two elements into one cohesive whole instead of utilizing either only arches or only shells. With fabric as the chosen material, our premise proposed suspending and interconnecting multiple arches of varying dimensions from a boundary surface to allow for the placement of fabric between them, which would result in a shell bounded by arches. Subsequent simplifications condensed this concept down to the parabolic synthesis of one arch and one shell, using climbing rope and fabric. A diagonal frame served as the boundary conditions for our experiments, simulating a slope, while the rope provided two landing points at its ends and the fabric gave the third point of contact.
