Rice Architecture
26HM_X11
This project explores compression-only structures through a catenary model. The base is constructed from wood and wrapped in silver-grey vinyl, providing a clean and sturdy frame. Above, a 6x6 grid is drilled with holes to accommodate hooks, from which steel chains are suspended. These chains follow the natural curve of a catenary arch, responding to gravity to form various curves.
This project demonstrates the potential of compression-only systems in architecture. The catenary arch, with its inherent stability and efficiency, proves ideal for large-scale public spaces, like a stadium, where visual impact and structural strength are critical.
