Rice Architecture

For the membrane model, we sought to emulate the forms developed for the hanging model exercise, but with different materials that responded better to tensile forces. For the fabric we chose elastane on account of its elasticity, and thin metal rods replaced the original rope. We also worked with similar boundary conditions, simulating an incline with our plywood model base. As was the case with the hanging model, the edge condition of the shell proved to be the part of the system which needed to be brought to better resolution on account of its looseness and the resulting ripples across the membrane. This resolution came through the addition of more arches along all or most of the shell’s edges.
