At the start of our investigation, we wanted to explore the appearance of “levitating” through a hanging model. We resolved that if we use thin string on a black background, the material we choose to manipulate will appear as if it's floating. The major challenges to this concept were the suspension system and material choice. For the suspension system, we thought of many ideas such as a crank system or a marionette winding fish wire system that moves peaks of the fabric. The potential materials we looked at to manipulate were chainmail, weaving paper, hair elastics, ribbon, and strings of chain. After experimenting, we thought of replicating chainmail through a cheaper and lighter option: 3D printing. From this discovery, we shifted our main focus of the project from the peaks created from winding fish string, to the exploration of forms created naturally through the materiality of two different 3D printed patterns: the H and X pattern. We wanted these two patterns to convey different densities, thus achieving different forms due to its weight and flexibility.
